There are many different smile-alignment issues that need to be dealt with by orthodontic treatment. Today, our Hennes Orthodontics would like to focus on one of those issues, which is malocclusion. Occlusion in Vista, California, is the alignment and spacing of your upper jaw and lower teeth when you bite down, and malocclusion is the poor positioning of the teeth. Oftentimes, the jaw and teeth don’t fit perfectly together, and there are four different bite problems that can occur, including:
An open bite is when the back teeth touch together when you bite down but the front teeth do not. This issue can be caused by thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.
An overbite involves the vertical overlapping of the upper teeth over the lower teeth. This issue can be hereditary or it can be formed by a misaligned jaw. It can also occur because of daily habits, such as eraserhead chewing or nail biting.
An overjet involves the upper teeth projecting beyond the lower teeth. This issue could be due to a large top jaw, a small bottom jaw, or a combination of the two.
A crossbite involves the top teeth biting inside the lower teeth when the mouth is closed. This can occur with either the front teeth or the back teeth. This issue could be due to genetics, prolonged thumb sucking, severe tongue thrusting, crowded teeth, or missing teeth.
Now that you know all about the different types of malocclusion, your orthodontist, Dr. Jerrold Hennes, and our team ask you to evaluate your smile and see if you suffer from any of these issues.
