When you make the decision to get braces, you’re committing to at least a year’s worth of very visible orthodontic treatment. This isn’t a decision to be taken lightly, which is why our team here at Hennes Orthodontics recommends you closely study all your options before deciding which style of braces you want to wear. For adults especially, this is an important thing to consider.

So let’s take a look at some different types of braces.

Traditional and ceramic braces have metal brackets secured to your teeth by an adhesive resin. Ceramic braces are coated with a ceramic material that can be color matched to the natural enamel of your teeth making them less noticeable. In some cases bands and spacers might also be used.

Keep in mind that the ceramic coated braces stain differently than your natural enamel. So you will want to avoid dark beverages, tobacco use and foods known to cause staining. If you do have staining issues, avoid whitening products as the enamel under your brackets will be unaffected.

Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces, except they are attached to the back of your teeth, giving them cosmetic appeal. Lingual braces can sometimes be hard to clean.

If you have teeth that require minor cosmetic adjustments, then a clear plastic aligner might be a good option. Brands like Invisalign and ClearCorrect have been growing in popularity with many adults. These aligners are made from a clear durable plastic that you to wear the aligners for around 20 hours per day. Every two weeks you will switch to a new set of aligners that gradually adjust your teeth.
