If you have braces, it’s very important to take good care of them. If you don’t, your appliance, smile and entire orthodontic journey can pay the consequences. If your braces are damaged or become ineffective, then they can’t properly align your teeth and give you your perfect smile. If you don’t properly clean your braces regularly, you can suffer dental problems, like cavities. You don’t want that, do you? So, it’s very important to care for your braces regularly. Our orthodontist, Dr. Jerrold Hennes, is happy to help you do so by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Keep up on oral hygiene: It’s very important to brush and floss regularly. In fact, it’s recommended to brush after every meal and floss at least once a day. If you can floss more, that’s best. Oral hygiene can help you remove food particles and plaque that build up on the teeth and in the smile.

-Use orthodontic tools to clean your braces: Sometimes toothbrushes and floss don’t reach the little spots of the braces. This is why orthodontic tools, like interdental brushes, were created. Use these tools to clean the hard-to-reach areas of your smile so you can maintain top-notch teeth, gums and braces.

-Watch what you eat: There are many foods that can damage your braces if you’re not careful. Some of those foods include hard, sticky and chewy foods. They tend to pull the brackets off the teeth and even bend the wires. So, avoid these foods as much as possible.
